    Asian Roboticism: Connecting Mechanized Labor to the Automation of Work

    Abstract This article reconsiders the present-day automation of work and its transformation of who we are as humans. What has been missing from this important conversation are the social meanings surrounding Asian roboticism or how Asians have already been rendered as “robotic” subjects and labor. Through this racial gendered trope, I assess whether industrial automation will lessen, complicate, or exacerbate this modern archetype. By looking at corporate organizational practices and public media discourse, I believe that Asian roboticism will not simply vanish, but potentially continue to affect the ways such subjects are rendered as exploitable alienated robots without human rights or status

    Capital structure is one of the most important topics in Corporate Finance, and still attracting many famous scholars to explain factors that affect firms’ choice of capital structure. In this paper, we first discuss the importance of capital structure to a company itself, and to its investors. Secondly, I will introduce the concept of operating leases as an important component of debt. Then, we review the most famous capital structure theories to see what factors affects theoretically optimal capital structure and CFO decisions on capital structure. Finally, I point out some statistical issues in studying capital structure and suggest some remedies to these problems

    The Impact of Microfinance on Women Empowerment in The Case of Vietnam

    In recent years, most microfinance programs have focused on gender issues with significant support given to poor female clients with the goal of facilitating their access to capital. An interesting fact to be considered is that women are regarded as wonderful clients, as they appear to engage in a more efficient manner in the saving process and the repayment of microloans when compared to men. Based on existing studies, researchers suggest that women are also more responsible regarding the management of finances in the context of poor families (Aggarwal et al., 2015; D\u27Espallier et al., 2011; Mayoux, 2005)

    On the Struggles and Experiences of Southeast Asian American Academics

    This article examines Southeast Asian Americans (SEAA) academics in the U.S. academy, relating their complex positionalities within higher education to their communities and societies. While many educational studies have been done on SEAA students, almost none focus on professional scholars and college faculty. Combining cultural-structural critique with close analysis of public writings and personal interviews, the article finds that that SEAA are ignored, and/or tokenized in the Ivory Tower due to structural as well as epistemological issues. It indicates that the public discourse and policies about Southeast Asians in academia not only neglects racial and class hierarchies, but obscures issues of gender equity, mentoring, discrimination, hiring, tenure, and retention. To explain how and why Southeast Asian professors are “missing,” this article seeks to: 1) built a more critical framework and interdisciplinary methodology for studying SEAA in academia in ways that are intersectional, anti-racist, and comparative 2) challenge dominant narratives of Asians and Asian Americans as they pertain to SEAAs and 3) reveal participants’ own stories of agency and belonging in their communities and institutions

    A stochastic model of the influence of buffer gas collisions on Mollow spectra

    In this paper we consider the influence of collisional fluctuations on the Mollow spectra of resonance fluorescence (RF). The fluctuations are taken into account by a simple shift of the constant detuning, involved in a set of optical Bloch equations by collision frequency noise which is modelled by a two-step random telegraph signal (RTS). We consider in detail the Mollow spectra for RF in the case of an arbitrary detuning of the laser frequency, where the emitter is a member of a statistical ensemble in thermodynamic equilibrium with the buffer gas at temperature TT which is treated as a colored environment, and velocity vv is distributed with the Maxwell-Boltzmann density

    Pinhole Multistep Centrifuge Outflow Method for Estimating Unsaturated Hydraulic Properties with Small Volume Soil Samples

    If soil hydraulic conductivity or water holding capacity could be measured with a small volume of samples, it would benefit international fields where researchers can only carry a limited amount of soils out of particular regions. We performed a pinhole multistep centrifuge outflow method on three types of soil, which included granite decomposed soil (Masa soil), volcanic ash soil (Andisol soil), and alluvial clayey soil (paddy soil). The experiment was conducted using 2 mL and 15 mL centrifuge tubes in which pinholes were created on the top and bottom for air intrusion and outflow, respectively. Water content was measured at 5, 15, and 30 min after applying the centrifuge to examine the equilibrium time. The results showed that pinhole drainage worked well for outflow, and 15 or 30 min was sufficient to obtain data for each step. Compared with equilibrium data, the retention curve was successfully optimized. Although the curve shape was similar, unsaturated hydraulic conductivities deviated largely, which implied that K-s caused convergence issues. When K-s was set as a measured constant, the unsaturated hydraulic properties converged well and gave excellent results. This method can provide soil hydraulic properties of regions where soil sampling is limited and lacks soil data

    Features of wave field, its effect to erosion - deposition processes in the Cua Dai (Hoi An), Cai river mouth (Nha Trang) and Phan Thiet Bay in typical local wind conditions

    Based on the hydrodynamic model and Shore Protection Manual (CERC - USA) we have calculated wave field characteristics in the typical wind conditions (wind velocity equal to 13m/s in the high frequency direction of the wind regime). Comparison between measured and calculated wave parameters was presented and these results were corresponded to each other. The following main wave characteristics were calculated: -Pattern of the refraction wave field. -Average wave height field. -Longshore current velocity field in surf zone. From distribution features of wave field characteristics in research areas, it could be summarized as following: - The formation of wave fields in the research areas was unequal because of their local difference of hydrometeorological conditions, river discharge, bottom relief… - At Cuadai (Dai mouth, Hoian) area in the N direction of incident wave field, wave has caused serious variation of the coastline. The coastline in the whole region, especially, at the south of the mouth was eroded and the foreland in the north of the mouth was deposited. - At Cai river mouth (Nhatrang) area in the E direction of incident wave field, wave has effected strongly and directly to the inshore and channel structure. - At Phanthiet bay area in the SW direction of incident wave field, wave has effected strongly to the whole shoreline from Da point to Ne point and caused serious erosion
